My name is Gabriela 'Gaby' Flores and I am en route to earning my doctorate in Sociology at the University of California, Merced. My overall research interests include youth and families, race and ethnicity, education, and gender. In my current research, I am primarily interested in how parenting styles are constructed and maintained within Latine families, with a particular focus on higher education. I am also interested in the role of Hispanic Serving Institutions in the experiences and outcomes of self-identifying Latine college students.
I am a proud daughter of Mexican and Salvadoran immigrants. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. I am a first-generation college graduate and aspire to help other first-generation college students reach their educational goals. I hold degrees from the University of California, Santa Barbara (BA 2019), California State University, Northridge (MA 2021), and University of California, Merced (MA 2023).
I started this blog to share my experiences and knowledge with others who are interested in pursuing graduate school in Sociology, discussing topics focused on Latine families, and connecting on other shared interests. This blog covers a wide range of material related to works in progress, current academic reads, and my thoughts on contemporary social issues. I also write about my personal experiences as an aspiring sociologist.
I am currently a PhD candidate. In my program, I am a fifth-year student who completed all requirements to be considered All But Dissertation (ABD) in Fall 2024.
